Located in the Byōdō-in temple, in Kyoto, Japan - The main building, "The Phoenix Hall" consists of a central hall, flanked by twin wing corridors on both sides of the central hall, and a tail corridor. The central hall houses an image of Amida Buddha. The roof of the hall displays statues of the Chinese phoenix, called hōō in Japanese. The building is regarded as almost the sole remaining example from the glorious Fujiwara Regent Period, which is also considered as one of the most important cultural assets of Japan. [Wikipedia]

Getting this photograph as seen above was an exercise in patience, with large groups of visitors queuing by the footbridge to enter at frequent intervals - as I recall I waited around 40 minutes to get this shot. I decided to shoot this in Black and White, with a red filter to increase the contrast as I feel it did more to enhance the structure of the building than shooting in colour in the bright midday sunlight.
