The Common Kingfisher is a
sparrow-sized bird has the typical short-tailed, large-headed
kingfisher profile; it has blue upperparts, orange underparts
and a long bill. It feeds mainly on fish, caught by diving,
and has special visual adaptations to enable it to see prey
under water. The glossy white eggs are laid in a nest at the
end of a burrow in a riverbank.
Blashford Lakes Nature
Reserve used to be a series of lifeless gravel pits, now
transformed to provide a haven for wildlife. Popular with bird
watchers there are several lakes and 8km of gravel paths which
wind through woodland and grassland to the get you to the
hides. In winter time there are reckoned to be up to 5,000
birds with many having flown here from Scandinavia. Find out
