The Rialto Bridge (Italian: Ponte
di Rialto; Venetian: Ponte de Rialto) is the oldest of the
four bridges spanning the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy.
Connecting the sestieri (districts) of San Marco and San Polo,
it has been rebuilt several times since its first construction
as a pontoon bridge in 1173, and is now a significant tourist
attraction in the city. [Wikipedia]
This image
was photographed from the centre of the Rialto Bridge facing
East along the Grand Canal. The building on the left is the
Palazzo Dei Camerlenghi - a renaissance palazzo which dates
from the late 1400's, it currently houses the regional main
offices of the Italian Comptroller and Auditor General.
The tower
seen in the background in the centre of the images is the
impressive campanile (bell tower) of Chiesa Cattolica
Parrocchiale dei Santi Apostoli (Church of the Holy Apostles
of Christ) - a 7th-century Roman Catholic church located in
the Cannaregio sestiere of the Italian city of Venice. |
