The Little Owl and Great Spotted Woodpecker are both native UK birds and often inhabit the same areas. Here both birds pick the same post to feed from. The Woodpecker was first on the scene but the larger Owl came in with its outstretched claws to bully the smaller bird away. You can see the Woodpecker fought back and has some Owl feathers in its beak from the close encounter. The whole episode lasted around 10 seconds before both birds flew off.

Photographed at Droitwich Spa Nature Reserve in Worcestershire, Ian had gone along with a few other photographers to observe the little owls and their chicks. Ian said: "The parental instinct kicked in for both birds as they fought for territory and food and it looked like there was no chance of these two becoming feathered friends."
