The Consolidated PBY Catalina was a
development of a pre-war design which first took to the air in
1935. The PBY series were produced in greater numbers than any
other flying boat and saw service throughout the second World
War predominantly in a search and rescue role.
G-PBYA was
originally ordered for the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Canso
A amphibian, basically equivalent to the US Navy PBY-5A. It
was built by Canadian Vickers at Cartierville, Quebec It was
taken on charge by the air force on 27 October 1943 and
initially saw service with 9 (Bomber Reconnaissance) Squadron
at Bella Bella on the British Columbia coast between Vancouver
and Prince Rupert.
G-PBYA now
in its colours representing USAAF OA-10A 44-33915 first flew
at a UK Air show in 2004, since then the Catalina has been
operated by Plane Sailing Air Displays Limited. The enterprise
is supported by its own ‘fan club’ – The Catalina Society. The
aircraft is based at Duxford where it is a regular participant
in the home airshows, but can also been seen in displays all
over Europe.
