I have visited Bosham Harbour many times before I got back into photography, and had always wanted to go back to photography the harbour at low tide, as I recalled that the channels from which the water drains away provide good leading lines towards the village and the church itself.
I had visited a few times in 2018 but always found that the tide was in (another great photographic opportunity but I feel the light has to be just right), so decided to watch the weather and tide timetables and eventually it all fell in to place in the August. I photographed this scene in Black and White with a red filter on my lens to enhance the contrast, and bring out the texture in the clouds.
According to local legend it is at Bosham Harbour that King Canute tried (or proved the futility of trying) to hold back the tide, depending on which account you happen to be reading. Bosham is not unique with regard to ownership of this event as there is also a claim at Southampton and also at Gainsborough in Lancashire.
