White Phalaenopsis Orchids

The name 'Phalaenopsis' translated from Greek means 'Phalaena like' and is believed to be a reference to a genus of large moth called Phalaena, because the flowers of some species resemble a moth in flight. Phalaenopsis Orchids are native to most parts of Asia, including China, Phillipines, Vietnam,  India, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and down through to parts of Australia and New Guinea. 

This particular photo was taken in Singapore Botanic Gardens, where there is an extensive Orchid breeding and Conservation Biotechnology program making the laboratory here in Singapore a world leader in Orchid cloning and hybridisation. 

Singapore Botanic Gardens have a massive Orchid Garden with over 1000 species and 2000 hybrids on display and are a delight to all of your sense and as a bonus are very photogenic too. There are several other 'Must See' attractions here including a Bonsai Garden, Sun Garden, Ginger Garden, Rain Forest, and the Botany Centre - believe me I have not listed everything!

The pair of Orchids featured in this image were exposed for the white petals in order to create an almost black background. Dozens of photos were taken of this one paring from a variety of angle and different exposures, and this was selected as it gave the most emphasis on the shape and structure of the whole flower - it's just a shame you can't smell it too.
