Breathtaking English lavender with its wonderful soothing fragrance adorns many English cottage gardens. One of my all-time favourite flowers I have many lavender plants growing in my garden in West Sussex where I cut and dry the flowers. I captured this image of the lavender at the height of the flowering season in June 2025 which turned out to be a very good harvest with lavender fields across the UK looking spectacular.
Lavender is believed to have been introduced to the UK by the Romans thousands of years ago, they used it to treat battle wounds, repel insects and to cook and wash with.
One of the oldest perfumes used in England, Queen Elizabeth 1 used lavender as a scent and in her tea to treat migraines. During the Great Plague in 1665 it was thought to protect people from becoming infected.
Lavender today is still widely used in perfume form and in soaps and other preparations for its natural healing properties.
