Tulips are native to Central Asia and the Middle East where they were considered a luxury and were first introduced into Europe in the 16th century from Turkey. They were distributed throughout Holland resulting in a huge demand which eventually caused the tulip market to crash. They became so popular in paintings and festivals in the mid-seventeenth century which resulted in the first economic bubble. Named “tulip mania” the bulbs became so expensive they were used as money.
Today tulips are readily available from early in the year, I photographed these fresh (yellow) tulips in January 2019. The inspiration for my image came when one of the petals fell and showed the pistils inside. I decided to photograph the tulips in black and white, which I believe gives the image a soft and romantic look.
