I photographed this deep red Dahlia flower in October 2018. Raindrops on the petals glowed in the Autumn sunlight and shone through the droplets showing a hint of the flower stamens. Dahlia’s are stunning, long flowering and very photogenic flowers. According to The National Dahlia Society, the Dahlia has been in Europe for over two hundred years. It came from Mexico to the Botanical Gardens in Madrid towards the end of the eighteenth century.
Today, there are cultivars in the form of the waterlily, the paeony, the orchid, the chrysanthemum and the anemone, then there are the main formations like the decorative, the cactus and semi-cactus types and the ball forms that have as their smallest relative the popular Pompon dahlias that beguile so many gardeners.
I was honoured to have my image of Dahlia ‘Christine’ featured in the National Dahlia Collection 2018 calendar, I subsequently changed the title to ‘Miss November’.
