Two C-47 Dakota's departing the former HMS Daedalus (now Solent Airport) during a re-enactment for the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day landings in 2014.
Eight Dakota's in total took off from HMS Daedalus to join 6 others for a mass parachute drop at Carentan, in a remembrance titled "Daks over Normandy". The two Dakota's seen here in invasion stripes are "Union Jack Dak" and "Drag em Oot".
HMS Daedalus was the busiest airfield on the South Coast during D-Day as the RAF were joined by Canadian Typhoons and Mustangs who also flew from here. As well as this, US Navy Squadron VCS-7 used the airfield as the base for their Spitfires. (www.theddaystory.com)
