The bearded tit is a small bird with a long tail that is mainly found in large reedbeds where it feeds on insects and reed seeds. It builds its nest low down among the reeds, often on piles of dead reed stems. Bearded tits (aka Bearded Reedling) can be heard calling with a nasal 'ting' or 'ping' sound as they fly about the reeds. The males are more colourful than the females and have a long dark 'moustache' rather than a beard.
This particular example is a female and was photographed at Farlington Marshes in Portsmouth back in January. In the last survey I am aware of it is reckoned that there are around 780 pairs in the UK, and on the day in question 4 or 5 pairs were seen at Farlington - funnily enough the photographers outnumbered the birds by about 2 to 1.
