I am very fortunate to live close to Cannock Chase where it is possible to see three species of Deer. Muntjacs are rare here but I occasionally hear them barking at night and the Red Deer are present but are mainly located at the opposite side of the area to where I live. Therefore, the Deer I encounter most is the iconic Fallow Deer (pictured here). The fallow deer on Cannock Chase show a range of colours; some are very dark brown and others quite pale. This particular Buck is having the very beautiful, typical spotted coat that one would usually expect in a Fallow Deer.
I took this image during the rutting season (Usually mid-October), I was with a small group of other photographers at the time and we had been watching some posturing and loud calling taking place in the distance for some time. As we watched them head off out of view we decided to change position and moved around a little to locate ourselves with the sun behind us. Also, having previously observed some deer tracks and gaps in fences I was able to guess the possibly location that a deer may decide to travel. After a few minutes this magnificent Buck wondered across our view and turned to pose for the cameras for a few seconds before continuing his journey. I was thrilled with the encounter and very satisfied with the image.
