Small Copper

The Small Copper (Lycaena Phlaeas) is a fast flying butterfly that, once settled, is unmistakable with its bright copper-coloured forewings. It is a widespread species and a familiar and welcome sight for many naturalists throughout the summer months, and it's flight period is a long one – from April to October in successive broods. The caterpillar feeds on sorrel and dock. 

Males are great fun to watch as they are rather territorial and will chase any butterfly on their patch - this lovely one is feeding on a dahlia in my back flowerbed.

In my previous life I worked professionally with horses. But I was forced to abandon this career that I loved because of a series of nasty injuries – which are common in this industry. What helped me cope with this loss and the medical difficulties that ensued was wildlife photography. But not just any wildlife – I fell in love with the overlooked and the tiny and they have helped turn my life around. 

The natural world is incredible, beautiful and at times harsh. I encourage everyone to look around them more, just for a second longer and watch the little world around you. You may find yourselves fascinated too!
