Portsmouth Naval Base has been operational for eight centuries, it is the largest Royal Navy base and is home to almost two-thirds of the British fleet. This image was taken from the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth which offers a unique perspective of the base. Both of the Royal Navy’s new Battleships were in harbour at the time. HMS Queen Elizabeth and her sister ship, HMS Prince Of Wales are the biggest ships ever built for the Royal Navy, weighing in at over 65,000 tonnes each.
The historic dockyard is home to many Royal Navy treasures, but also visible in this image are the iconic warships Victory and Warrior. Victory was of course Nelson’s flag-ship and is one of the oldest surviving complete ships in the World. Warrior was built in 1860 and was Britain’s first iron-hulled, armoured battleship. This image provides a unique view of the Royal Navy now & then.
